What’s up with my digestion?

On a daily basis I work with clients to improve their digestion. Sometimes these conditions can be related to a low gut diversity as there’s not enough bacteria to do the job you need them to.

Sometimes, digestive enzymes can help but that depends on what you can’t digest. But what about the enzymes in food? Can they improve our digestion?

Pineapple has digestive enzymes called bromelain. These are enzymes are proteases so they break down protein and are used to tenderise meat. You can buy this enzyme as a supplement and some people have had success.

Another food is pawpaw and it also has proteases called papain. Again, it is used to tenderise meat and you can buy it as a supplement.

Bananas have amylases and glucosidases that break down complex carbohydrates like starches. Bananas are a powerhouse of nutrients because they also contain prebiotics such as inulin, pectin and resistant starch (if they’re green).

So, does food work? It might but it depends on your habits, health status and what diet you are already having but it doesn't hurt to have a variety of whole foods that can improve your overall gut health. It can't help to give it a go. Reducing foods that are ultra processed, reducing alcohol and caffeine and salt can all help to improve digestion and your gut health.
